Jim Newton, P.E., DEE Composting has been a viable option for the treatment and consolidation of yard trimmings and municipal solid waste for a number of years. With the life span of many municipal landfills approaching their limits, ways to extend the lifespans have been sought. One of the ways many municipalities have been using is to ban yard waste and food waste from landfills. Composting has become a viable alternative. The composted material can then be used as a soil amendment and basically reused. The US EPA developed a guidance manual on composting of yard trimmings and solid waste. This course is based upon the US EPA document “Composting Yard Trimming and Municipal Solid Waste”, EPA Document No. EPA 530-R-94-003, May 1994. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. ![]() NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public.
