Building a (Storm-Resistant) Safe Room

Mark P. Rossow, Ph.D, PE Retired

Every year in the United States, high winds from tornadoes and hurricanes injure and kill people, and cause millions of dollars worth of property damage. Even so, more and more people build homes in tornado- and hurricane-prone areas, potentially exposing themselves to risk from such storms. This course covers the design and construction of storm-resistant safe rooms that will provide people in high-risk areas with near-absolute protection from tornado or hurricane winds and associated flying debris. The designs considered are applicable to homes, small businesses, and small community shelters.

This course is based entirely on the technical publication: Taking shelter from the Storm, Building a Safe Room For Your Home or Small Business, FEMA 320, Aug. 2008 3rd edition.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
