Airport Construction Standards – Part Two

Vincent D. Reynolds, MBA, PE

There are over 10,000 airports in the United States that serve a variety of flights such as commercial, business, and private. With thousands of flights occurring each day, air travel has to conform to certain criteria to ensure the safe operation of aircraft and its passengers. The federal aviation administration (FAA) was formed in 1958 to regulate and oversee all forms of civil aviation in the United States. On its website the FAA mission reads as follows; “our continuing mission is to provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world.” Part of this mission is to provide the safest and most efficient airports that serve the aviation community in our country.

This course Airport Construction Standards - Part Two, will cover flexible surface courses, rigid pavement, and ancillary miscellaneous items.

This course material is based on the advisory circular (AC) 150/5370-10E “Standards for specifying Construction of Airports,” as published on the website of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Advisory Circular (AC) AC 150/5370-10E recommends the guidelines and specifications for construction materials and methods used in the construction of airports. This (AC) is mandatory for all projects funded with federal grant monies through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and with revenue from the Passenger Facility Charge (PFC).

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
