Overview of Electrical Engineering for School Design

Thomas Mason, PE

This is a course on what an Electrical Engineer does when he designs his part of a school. It is presented as an opportunity to show what an Electrical Engineer does for facility design for most commercial buildings. The emphasis is on practical design methods and critical steps which must not be overlooked. Examples are drawn from the author’s experience in Ohio and Michigan.

The subject matter today must more closely consider Energy Conservations Codes, because, mostly, they are new, and, they are changing at a rapid pace. Further, adoption is not consistent across a County, much less across a State. Technical content includes power service, bulk distribution, connection to lights, receptacles, computers and HVAC, lighting controls, data wiring, security access wiring, security CCTV wiring, communications and fire alarms.

This course in interactive, to assure understanding is taking place and to guide the content in directions of value to the student. It includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
