System Failure – Anatomy of a Blackout : Part II – Cascading Failure of the Power System

Lee Layton, PE

This three-hour course is a detailed account of the August 14, 2003 electric system blackout that affected over 50 million people in the Eastern United States - one of the largest blackouts in American history. This course is part two of a two part series about the blackout. Part one covered the conditions leading up to the point where the system started cascading into a blackout. Part II goes into detail about how the uncontrolled blackout spread across the Eastern Interconnect and why it ultimately stopped.

This course includes a multiple choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
