Gas Metal Arc Welding-GMAW – Best Practices

Jurandir Primo, PE

The subject of this Gas Metal Arc Welding-GMAW – Best Practices is to show a short and practical course according to the best practical MIG welding standards and methods, with updated information for beginners, students, technicians, inspectors, engineers and contractors. Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), also known as Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding, is also a welding method using an electric arc between the workpiece and a continuous wire electrode. The weld metal is shielded from the atmosphere by a flow of an inert gas, or gas mixture. The Gas Metal Arc Welding is a versatile process that may be used to weld a wide variety of metals including carbon steels, low alloy steels, stainless steels, aluminum alloys, magnesium, copper and nickel alloys. Welds may be made in all positions, and the process may be used for semiautomatic welding or au-tomatic welding. In semiautomatic welding, the operator needs merely to guide the welding gun along the joint at a uniform speed and hold a relatively constant arc length. In automatic welding, the gun is mounted on a travel carriage that moves along the joint, or the gun may be stationary with the work moving or revolving beneath it. The recommendations are based on industry reliable practices and have to be used as guidelines. The author can not assume any role or responsibility for improper use of welding processes, materials and inspection procedures. A qualified engineer in welding should be always consulted to give satisfactory solutions for GMAW, AWS and ASME codes.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
