The Proper Use of Texas Professional Seals

Randall W. Whitesides, PE

Take a look at a collection of acts of misconduct by Texas licensees, taken randomly from public records:

Violation Case No. D-29440: Mr. (name withheld), San Leon, Texas, signed his name and affixed his Texas engineer seal to a plan and detail sheet that was not prepared by him nor under his direct supervision and he altered the plan sheet without proper notification to the original professional engineer.

Violation Case No. (not provided): Mr. (name withheld) failed to affix his architectural seal and signature to the table of contents or index of a bound set of architectural specifications, and failed to affix his architectural seal and signature to two addenda revising architectural specifications and plans.

Violation Case No. 07-42: Mr. (name withheld) provided his client with a draft plat for the developer to review with the county engineer to assist in resolving flood plain questions. The draft plat was not signed but contained a seal and a certification statement. Subsequently, the draft plat was recorded in Harrison County. This preliminary plat did not contain the required statement "Preliminary, this document shall not be recorded for any purpose."

This course gets to the source of these and other sealing and certification mistakes; it does so in a clear, concise, and straightforward presentation. Just a few of the topics covered are: (1) The dos and don’ts of sealing, signing, and dating certifications, (2) the acceptable and unacceptable types of seals, (3) the exemptions, exceptions, and special situations to sealing, and (4) the avoidance of sealing improprieties due to practice overlap.

This course includes a multiple choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
