The Proper Use of Pennsylvania Professional Seals

Randall W. Whitesides, PE

Take a look at a collection of acts of misconduct by Pennsylvania licensees, taken randomly from public records:

Disciplinary Case File No. (withheld): Mr. (Name withheld), PE-(number withheld) had his license and current registration suspended for a minimum of 60 days, was assessed a $250 civil penalty and directed to complete a course in professional ethics for affixing his seal to building plans the he neither prepared nor properly reviewed.

Disciplinary Case File No. (withheld): Mr. (Name withheld), PG-(number withheld) was assessed a $3,500 civil penalty because he practiced geology when he held no current valid certificate and failed to place his signature near his seal when he issued documents to a client; and affixed his seal to documents after the expiration of his registration.

Disciplinary Case File No. (withheld): Mr. (Name withheld), RA-(withheld) was assessed a $1,000 civil penalty. He sealed or stamped drawings when his certificate to practice architecture was expired.

This course gets to the source of these and other sealing and certification mistakes; it does so in a clear, concise, and straightforward presentation. Just a few of the topics covered are: (1) The dos and don’ts of sealing, signing, and dating certifications, (2) the acceptable and unacceptable types of seals, (3) the exemptions, exceptions, and special situations to sealing, and (4) the avoidance of sealing improprieties due to practice overlap.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
