Cold-Formed Steel Shear Wall Design

John C. Huang, Ph.D., PE

To maintain the lateral stability of the buildings constructed with load-bearing steel stud walls, the design engineer often utilizes the cold-formed steel shear walls. In this lesson, you are required to study Shear Wall Design Guide published by North American Steel Framing Alliance (NASFA). This technical document provides the minimum design requirements and the allowable shear capacities of various wall constructions. If you are interested in learning more about the shear wall design, we recommend you to take PDH Online Course S181 - Cold-Formed Steel X-Brace Design, which provides detailed guidance on several lateral stability design aspects, from wind pressure calculation to X-brace layout to connection design and detailing. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
