Marvin Liebler, P.E. Tapered frames, flagpoles, light standards, and monopole highway signs are used extensively for the savings in material over constant cross-section (prismatic) beams. This is done by using maximum material cross-sections matching the required strength at that location, and decreasing the cross-section as the required strength decreases. Analysis of these tapered beams is, however, less well known than the analysis of structures with prismatic members. This course describes the finite element method used in analysis of these members, with examples, to gain an understanding of analysis of tapered frames and monopoles. The course includes a multiple choice quiz at the end. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. ![]() NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public.
